The purpose of keyword research is to find words and phrases that users are searching on Google and other major search engines. Use the exact same words in your website's content to get rank in search results.

If you are writing content for a new website or an existing website, then research the keyword on that topic. Keyword Research provides you search data that can help answer questions like:

Another great way to find keywords is to look at the "Searches related to" section at the bottom of Google's search results.

For example, suppose you had a topic "increase website traffic" and you want to find that keyword in Google.

Scroll to the bottom of the page. You will find a list of 8 keywords related to your search term.

As with Google suggestions, these are keyword ideas that come directly from Google. So you do not have to guess whether they are popular or not. Google is really telling you: "Many people search for these keywords."

Keyword Difficulty

If you choose a keyword that is super competitive, it will be very difficult to rank it. But if you select a keyword with less competition, then you have a good chance to rank in top 3.

Focus on long-tail keywords. Long tails are usually less competitive.

How to Choose Right Keywords

The more people search for a keyword, the more traffic you can get.

Searching for high search volume and low competition keywords is the best way to rank on Google's first page.

Now the question is:

  • How to find relevant and related keywords that would be easy to rank and have high traffic with less competition.

Use tools to analyze keywords difficulty and search volume. A tool makes the entire process a lot easier.

Using tools to find and analyze keywords simplifies the whole process. Here are the free keyword research tools I personally use and recommend.

1. Ubersuggest

UberSuggest is a powerful keyword research tool by Neil Patel. Ubersuggest generates keyword ideas from Google's search suggestions. It also gives you data on each keyword (such as search volume, CPC, keyword difficulty, and more).

To get started, just enter the keyword that you want to analyze. You will see a list of keywords along with their search volume, keyword difficulty, CPC and more.

2. Google Keyword Planner

Google Keyword Planner is the most reliable source of keyword information online. That's because the data you get from Google Keyword Planner comes directly from Google.

The big downside of Google Keyword Planner is that it is designed to help people in their Google advertising campaigns, not with SEO.

But you can still use it to get a list of keyword ideas and find search queries that receive a lot of searches.

3. Keywords Everywhere

Keywords Everywhere is a free extension, you can install it on Chrome or Firefox. It shows search volume, CPC and competition data of keywords on multiple websites.

Advanced Tips

Now that you've learned the basics of keyword research, it's time to cover some advanced keyword research tips that you can implement immediately.

If you find a wonderful keyword, you want to be the owner of the first page of search results. First, create content on that topic on your site. Then, publish keyword-optimized content on authoritative sites like YouTube, LinkedIn.

Google Search Console Keyword Research

Google Search Console is a goldmine for keyword ideas.

Here's how it works:

Sign in to your Google Search Console account and go to "Performance report"

This report shows you the terms that get the most clicks from Google Search.

Then, sort the list by “Impressions”.

It shows you keywords that have a lot of impressions, but not clicks.

Now, create content targeting the same keyword. 

This strategy works because these are keywords, people are searching. And, your site has started ranking for that position. Google sees your site as a good fit in search results.

You only need to publish content focused on that specific keyword and you’re set.
